Accounting software for Norway, in English

Macct is a complete Norwegian accounting system with English interface, guidance, and email support. Built for foreigners running a Norwegian sole proprietorship (enkeltpersonforetak / ENK) or limited company (AS). Flat 100 NOK/month, no annual contract, no lock-in. 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Built for Norwegian rules, presented in English

Norway has its own specific accounting requirements: the NS 4102 chart of accounts, bimonthly VAT reporting (six terms per year), monthly payroll filing (A-melding), annual tax return through Altinn, and the strict Norwegian Bookkeeping Act (Bokføringsloven) with its rules on document immutability and five-year retention.

These rules don't disappear because you don't speak Norwegian. Macct enforces them automatically while presenting everything you need to read, decide and approve in plain English. The actual submissions to the Norwegian tax authorities use Norwegian terminology because that's what the authorities require — but Macct fills in the forms from your bookkeeping data and you review the contents in English before anything is sent.

Who Macct is for

  • Foreign founders setting up a Norwegian business. You've registered an ENK or AS at Brønnøysund and need bookkeeping that complies with Norwegian law.
  • International consultants invoicing in EUR, USD, GBP. Multi-currency invoicing built in, with daily Norges Bank rates and automatic NOK conversion for the general ledger.
  • EU citizens with a Norwegian D-number. You can run a sole proprietorship in Norway with a D-number; Macct supports this directly.
  • Anyone tired of Google-translating Norwegian accounting terms. The interface is native English. Help text, error messages, support — all in English.

What's included

  • Double-entry bookkeeping on the official NS 4102 chart of accounts. Hard balance validation — no unbalanced entries can be saved.
  • VAT (MVA) calculated automatically per transaction. Bimonthly VAT report generated from your books, ready to submit to Altinn after your explicit approval.
  • Invoicing as PDF or as EHF/Peppol e-invoice for B2B Norwegian customers. Multi-currency. KID and IBAN both supported.
  • Payroll with tax withholding, employer contribution (AGA), and holiday pay (12% standard). A-melding XML generated for monthly Altinn submission.
  • Receipt scanning with OCR plus AI-assisted account suggestions (Claude or local LLM). You review and approve before anything is posted.
  • Annual closing for AS: NRS 8 validation, 22% corporate tax calculation, transfer of result to equity, period locking, RF-1167 annual report draft.
  • Tax return drafts: RF-1175 for ENK, RF-1167 for AS. Generated from your books, never auto-submitted.
  • SAF-T export in the required v1.30 format (mandatory in Norway from January 2025).

Pricing

100 NOK/month, billed only for months you actually use the system. No annual contract, no lock-in, cancel anytime from settings. 30-day free trial — no credit card required to start.

For comparison: the larger Norwegian competitors (Fiken, Tripletex, Visma) typically charge 199-500 NOK/month with tier packages. Macct is a flat rate regardless of how many vouchers or employees you have, which makes it especially attractive for small operators.

What you still need to handle yourself

Honest about scope:

  • Brønnøysund registration: register your ENK or AS at brreg.no before signing up for Macct.
  • Norwegian business bank account: required for receiving customer payments and paying VAT/tax.
  • BankID or D-number: needed to log in to Altinn and submit tax returns.
  • Statutory auditor (only AS over certain thresholds — most small AS are exempt).

The full guide at macct.no/foreigners walks through each of these in detail.

Data & privacy

Servers are in the EU (Hetzner Germany / Finland). GDPR compliant. You can export everything as SAF-T, Excel and PDF at any time — no extra charge, no lock-in. The Norwegian Bookkeeping Act requires five-year retention of accounting data; Macct delivers export files that satisfy this requirement so you can leave whenever you want and still meet the legal retention requirement.
