Norwegian accounting in English

Macct is a full Norwegian accounting system — chart of accounts, VAT, payroll, tax filing via Altinn — built specifically for small businesses in Norway. The app, guidance and support are available in English, so you don't need to read Norwegian to keep your books in order.

Built for Norwegian rules, presented in English

Norway has specific accounting requirements — the NS 4102 chart of accounts, bimonthly VAT reporting, monthly payroll filing (A-melding), annual tax return via Altinn, and the strict Bokføringsloven (Norwegian Bookkeeping Act) on document immutability. These rules don't change because you don't speak Norwegian. Macct enforces them automatically, while presenting everything you need to see and decide in plain English.

Note on tax filings: The actual submissions to Altinn (VAT, annual report, tax return) are sent in Norwegian as required by the authorities — this is the form they expect. Macct fills them out for you from your bookkeeping data. You always review and approve in English before anything is submitted.

Who it's for

  • Sole proprietorships (ENK): consultants, freelancers, tradespeople, photographers — anyone running their own business in Norway under their personal CPR number.
  • Small limited companies (AS): 1–5 employees, revenue typically under a few million NOK, mandatory annual report and bimonthly VAT.
  • Foreign founders in Norway: you've registered a Norwegian business and need to keep books according to Norwegian law — but you'd rather not learn Norwegian accounting terminology to do it.
  • International consultants invoicing across borders: you bill clients in EUR, USD, GBP and other currencies — Macct handles multi-currency invoicing with daily Norges Bank rates and automatic NOK conversion.

What you still need to handle yourself

Honest about scope:

  • Brønnøysund registration: registering your ENK or AS in the Norwegian Register of Business Enterprises is done at brreg.no before you sign up for Macct. We validate against their API but don't register on your behalf.
  • Bank account: you'll need a Norwegian business bank account to receive customer payments and pay VAT/tax. Macct doesn't open bank accounts.
  • Altinn access: tax filings go through Altinn. You need a Norwegian electronic ID (BankID, MinID etc.). Foreigners can get this through their bank or D-number registration.
  • Annual auditor: AS companies above certain thresholds need a statutory auditor. Macct exports SAF-T which any Norwegian auditor can read directly.

Pricing

100 NOK/month, billed only for months you actually use the system. No lock-in, no annual contract, cancel anytime from settings. 30-day free trial — no credit card required.

For comparison: Fiken and Tripletex (the larger Norwegian competitors) charge 3,000–7,000 NOK/year on forced annual contracts. Macct is designed for the small operator who wants control without overhead.

FAQ

Do I need to know Norwegian to use Macct?

No. The interface, help text, error messages and email support are all in English. The actual tax submission forms to Altinn use Norwegian terminology because that's what the authorities require — but Macct fills them out for you from your books, and you review the data in English before sending.

Can I keep my books in EUR or USD?

The general ledger must be in NOK (Norwegian law). But invoices, receipts and bank transactions can be in any of 11 supported currencies — Macct converts to NOK using daily Norges Bank rates and tracks the original amount and rate so the audit trail is intact.

Is my data stored in the EU?

Yes. Servers are in Germany (Hetzner Helsinki/Falkenstein). GDPR compliant. You can export everything as SAF-T, Excel and PDF anytime.

I'm setting up a business in Norway — where do I start?

1. Register at brreg.no (ENK or AS). 2. Open a Norwegian business bank account. 3. Get electronic ID (BankID via your bank). 4. Sign up for Macct and bookkeep from day one — VAT registration kicks in at 50,000 NOK annual revenue and Macct will track it for you.
