Where the vendors have their strengths

Fiken

Fiken has established itself as the default choice for Norwegian accounting firms working with small companies. A large user base means your accountant probably already knows the system. Easy-to-use UI, stable product. The base price is lower than Macct, but bank connection, payroll and the tax return cost extra. A safe choice if you have a regular accounting firm.

Tripletex

Tripletex is broader than Fiken — it has its own modules for project management, time tracking, resource planning and CRM. It fits particularly well for consulting companies and project-based businesses that want everything in one place. Higher price, but more comprehensive functionality.

Visma eAccounting

Visma has the largest ecosystem of integrations with banks, payroll firms and industry solutions. Strongest if you already have other Visma tools. May be overkill for a small sole proprietorship or a one-person limited company (AS).

Macct

Macct is new (2026) and clearly the smallest in the market — and therefore also the least battle-tested of these four. The others have many years of operation and large user bases behind them; we want to be honest about that. In return, Macct is built with modern tools and a focus on keeping the price low. Best suited for sole proprietorships and small limited companies that do not need accounting-firm integrations, and for those who want to be early adopters. Multi-currency included is a real advantage for consultants who invoice internationally.

Which one suits you?

You run a sole proprietorship alone

Freelancer, tradesperson, photographer, consultant without employees. Macct or Fiken. Macct if you want a flat price with no lock-in and have AI-assisted bookkeeping. Fiken if you want a more established ecosystem.

You run a small limited company (1-5 employees)

Macct, Fiken or Tripletex. Macct if price and simplicity matter. Tripletex if you need integrated project management and time tracking.

You run a mid-sized limited company (10-50 employees)

Tripletex or Visma. Macct is not optimised for this volume. Tripletex has better project functionality, Visma has a broader integration ecosystem.

You are a large company (50+ employees)

Visma, Tripletex Enterprise or a specialised ERP (24SevenOffice, PowerOffice). These have the capacity and certifications required.

You are a foreigner setting up a Norwegian company

Macct is fully available in English. Tripletex and Visma have English support, but their main interface is Norwegian. Check Fiken's own pages for the status of their English interface.

You work with a regular accounting firm

Ask the firm which system they are familiar with. Fiken is the most widely used among Norwegian firms. Macct has its own firm feature with a client overview and one-click switching between clients — new in 2026, so your firm is unlikely to know it and should expect some training.

Switching between systems

All four vendors support SAF-T export (mandatory from January 2025). That means your data can always be moved over to another system. The SAF-T format is open and standardised — no vendor can lock you in.

Best time to switch: at year-end, after the year-end closing has been run. That way you avoid splitting a financial year between two systems.

Tip: Download the SAF-T file and PDF copies of previous annual accounts from your existing system and store them safely before you cancel the subscription. The Bookkeeping Act requires 5 years of retention regardless of which system you use now.

What all four have in common

  • NS 4102 chart of accounts
  • Bimonthly VAT return via Altinn
  • Invoice PDF + EHF/Peppol
  • Bank import from your online bank (file upload; a direct bank connection is an add-on)
  • Tax return with the business specification (which replaced RF-1167)
  • SAF-T export v1.40
  • Cloud-based, no local installation
  • EU/EEA data storage

In other words: none of them breaks Norwegian law, and all cover basic needs. The difference lies in price, ease of use, breadth of features and how much of an ecosystem you need.
